It was exciting to think we would make it together. That we would overcome everything. All the heartbreak we went through, that we would prove to everyone we were better than that. I think when a person makes a promise, they like to believe that they’re capable of committing to it. You can experiment all you want in life, but when it comes to relationships, it becomes a completely different story. You don’t just “try” a relationship and see if it works out. You don’t just “try” a person on, and hope it fits. This isn’t science class. This isn’t a fitting room. You’re experimenting with someone’s feelings. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. Everything affects everything. I think he would have liked to believe he could have committed to that promise, but when you get to my age, you start taking promises like that a little more serious. I should have known that the age difference was going to be a huge factor. I should have seen all the red flags.
